Wealth: A Necessity, Not the Goal of Life

Wealth is undoubtedly one of life’s necessities. It enables human beings to meet their material needs and maintain the basic structure of worldly life. But when wealth becomes the goal of life rather than a resource, it turns into a source of misery — destroying peace in this world and success in the Hereafter.
Wealth must remain a means, never the purpose of existence.

Money as a Support for Worldly Living

Human beings must live in this world for a limited time. To function in society, they require food, shelter, and other essentials — and these must usually be obtained through money.
In this respect, wealth is a valuable asset. It helps a person sustain himself and fulfill his material responsibilities.

Knowledge: The Higher and More Noble Pursuit

While wealth supports worldly life, knowledge nourishes the mind and spirit.
Without knowledge, a person cannot develop spiritually, nor can he contribute meaningfully to humanity.
A higher purpose of life is achieved only when an individual dedicates a major part of his time and energy to learning, reflection, and intellectual development.

The Balance Between Earning and Enlightenment

To pursue knowledge, a person must limit the time spent on earning money.
If earning becomes excessive, it leaves no room for spiritual growth or intellectual enrichment.
Balance is essential: earn what you need, but devote the best of your effort to inner development.

Wealth Cannot Nourish the Soul

Money can buy comfort, but it cannot provide peace.
It can satisfy material needs, but it leaves the spirit hungry.
A person who makes wealth his sole pursuit may feed his body — but his soul starves until his inner self becomes weak, empty, and lifeless.

Wealth as a Test: Fitna

The Qur’an calls wealth fitna — a trial.
If used wisely, wealth becomes a means to progress — enabling charity, service, learning, and human upliftment.
But if misused, it becomes a path to destruction, pride, restlessness, and spiritual ruin.

Conclusion

Wealth is a blessing — but only when kept under control.
It must support life, not dominate it.
True greatness lies not in how much money a person earns, but in how he uses it to uplift his soul and serve humanity.
